With phenomenally hospitable people, sensational food and a melting pot of different cultures, it's a truly magical African country.

It's hard to capture the flavours of "Moz" in words. It's vibe is legendary, especially along its fabulous coastline that's dotted with wonderful destinations and exceptional marine reserves. From the southernmost tip and the diving hotspots of Ponto d'Ouro and Ponto Malongane to the vibrant capital city of Maputo, north to the bustling towns of Inhambane, Beira, Vilanculos and Pemba, Mozambique, there's a wealth of places to visit and things to do and see.

GORONGOSA NATIONAL PARK

Gorongosa National Park is one of Africa's greatest wildlife restoration stories. In 2008, the Government of Mozambique and the Carr Foundation (Gorongosa Restoration Project), a US non-profit organisation, signed a 20-year Public-Private Partnership for the joint management of the park that was extended for a further 25 years in June 2018.

A pioneering conservation model balancing the needs of wildlife and people was adopted, protecting this beautiful wilderness and returning it to its rightful place as one of Africa’s greatest parks.

Over the years the park has seem some amazing "firsts", including in 2018 when the Gorongosa Project, in partnership with the Endangered Wildlife Trust, released a pack of 14 painted wolves (African wild gogs) into Gorongosa, marking the return of this endangered species after an absence of more than 25 years, and signifying the first ever painted wolf introduction into Mozambique.

BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO

A group of six islands off the coast of southern Mozambique accessed by the bustling town of Vilanculos and its modern, international airport, the Bazaruto archipelago lies within the Bazaruto National Park. The coast around Vilanculos and the islands themselves are known for their white-sand beaches and wonderful ocean filled with a rich variety of marine life.

The biggest of the islands, Bazaruto, is renowned for its towering sand dunes, while the coral reefs around Magaruque and Santa Carolina islands protect significant numbers of the critically endangered dugong. The wetlands, forests and grasslands of Benguerra Island's interior are home to many bird species which nest there.

There is a selection of outstanding luxury beach resorts, boutique hotels and lodges in and around Vilanculos and on the islands themselves, each offering a range of activities. Diving and snorkelling in the archipelago are a must, as is taking a dhow cruise and exploring the unique sandbanks.

TOFO

Idyllic Tofo, nestled on Mozambique's southern coast, is a haven for beach lovers and adventure seekers alike. Think swaying palm trees lining pristine white sand beaches lapped by turquoise waters. This laid-back beach town offers a relaxed atmosphere, with a strong focus on watersports, particularly diving and snorkelling.

Tofo's biggest draw is its proximity to the Manta Reef, a marine reserve teeming with incredible marine life. Divers and snorkellers can expect to encounter majestic manta rays, graceful whale sharks, dolphins, turtles, and a dazzling array of tropical fish. For those who prefer to stay dry, boat trips offer the chance to spot these magnificent creatures from the surface.

Beyond the water, Tofo boasts a chilled-out vibe. Local cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood line the beachfront, while a scattering of guesthouses and beach lodges offer comfortable accommodation. After a day of exploring the underwater world, unwind with a sundowner at a beach bar, soaking up the relaxed atmosphere and the breathtaking sunsets.

MAPUTO & MAPUTO SPECIAL RESERVE

Mozambique's capital city, Maputo, is a vibrant blend of Portuguese colonial architecture, African energy, and sweeping beaches. Nicknamed the "City of Acacias" for the many acacia trees lining its streets, Maputo offers a rich cultural tapestry and a relaxed, seaside vibe.

History buffs will love exploring the Baixa (downtown area), with its grand colonial buildings like the imposing Fortaleza de Maputo (Maputo Fortress) and the neoclassical Nossa Senhora da Conceição Cathedral. Art enthusiasts can delve into the National Art Museum's collection of Mozambican art, while those seeking a glimpse into local life can wander through the bustling atmosphere of the Craft Market.

For a break from the city, head south to the Maputo Special Reserve. This protected area offers a chance to escape the urban buzz and reconnect with nature. Here, visitors can spot a variety of wildlife, including antelope, zebras, crocodiles, and over 400 bird species. Boat trips on the Maputo River provide opportunities to see hippos and birdlife along the riverbanks. The reserve also boasts several beaches where visitors can relax, swim, or go snorkelling.
